What happens when a library also teaches you to mend?

 

The Mending Library is a small-grant initiative co-designed with the Free Libraries Network and The Community Library Project that supports community libraries to open stitching corners: spaces where reading meets repair. Each participating library receives a small grant for stitching materials, a curated set of books inspired by textile arts, hands-on training, and ongoing support to host stitching spaces for their communities.

 

The idea is simple. Libraries are already spaces where people come to learn, to sit, and to breathe. Adding a stitching corner invites them to make with their hands, to slow down, to talk to the person sitting next to them. But it also works the other way around. For older women who may never have felt comfortable walking into a library, a stitching corner is a different kind of entry point, something familiar, something theirs, in a space that was not always built for them. For young men and boys who have been told that needle and thread are not for them, it is an invitation to unlearn that and find something else instead.

 

In the pilot round running from April to August 2026, five Delhi NCR community libraries are part of this experiment: More Than Play, A Peace Library, The Community Library Project Khirkee, Kutumb Foundation, and Kitabi Dost. Each of the five libraries has designed their own path into the project, shaped by the communities they already know and serve. There is no single model, but rather a shared conviction that stitching can open doors that other things cannot.
